เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเอกชนแห่งแรกของประเทศมาเลเซีย มหาวิทยาลัยมีสองวิทยาเขต ที่หนึ่งในเมืองเทคโนโลยี ไซเบอร์จายา(ส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการมัลติมีเดียซูเปอร์คอร์ริดอร์) และอีกที่ในมะละกา ทั้งสองวิทยาเขตอยู่ห่างกันประมาณ 150 กม. โดยทางหลวงเส้นเหนือ-ใต้ เดิมมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งนี้ชื่อ มหาวิทยาลัยโทรคมนาคม (University Telekom) โดยวิทยาเขตมะละกาก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อ ค.ศ. 1997 โดยบริษัท Telekom Malaysia Berhad ซึ่งเป็นบริษัทโทรคมนาคมที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศมาเลเซีย

สาขาที่เปิดสอนได้แก่ วิศวกรรมศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี สารสนเทศ การจัดการ ธุรกิจ กฎหมาย และพหุสื่อสร้างสรรค์ ปัจจุบันมีนักศึกษาประมาณ 21,000 คน มีการผลิต 30,523 ผู้สำเร็จการศึกษาในเวลาและการสำรวจล่าสุดแสดงให้เห็นว่า 91% ของนักเรียน ได้รับการตอบรับเข้าทำงานในองค์กรต่างๆ ภายในระยะเวลา 6 เดือนของการสำเร็จการศึกษา นอกจากนี้ยังมีการเติบโตของจำนวนนักศึกษาต่างชาติเพิ่มขึ้นอีก 4200คน จาก 77 ประเทศ

มหาวิทยาลัยมัลติมีเดีย Multimedia University เป็นสถาบันหลักในการวิจัยและพัฒนาและการรักษาความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีกับอุตสาหกรรมผ่านความร่วมมือการวิจัย MMU ขณะนี้เป็นเจ้าภาพให้กับ 13 ศูนย์วิจัยที่มุ่งเน้นในพื้นที่เฉพาะของนาโนเทคโนโลยี Microsystems, ชีวภาพ, ความเป็นจริงเสมือนไมโครเวฟและ การสื่อสารโทรคมนาคม, วิศวกรรม, เล็คทรอนิคส์, หุ่นยนต์ขั้นสูงและธุรกิจ
